How to park your car safely
For many drivers, the search for the perfect parking spot is a daily occurrence. It’s also something that many of us try to complete as quickly as possible. But in that rush to get in or out the car door, what important details have you missed? Here are some tips that could potentially save you time and money when you park you car.
When should you use the parking brake?
Choose a well-lit spot
This might be a no-brainer, but in the course of a busy day it’s easy to forget if you have to work late that night. Always try to park near a streetlight and away from alleys and blind corners if possible. This will make it easier to see what’s ahead of your when you make your way back to your vehicle later that day or evening.
Use the parking brake
It’s always important to use the parking brake when on a hill. In addition, it’s always a good idea to turn the wheels of the car towards the curb next to the vehicle. That way if someone hits your car, the vehicle will go directly into the curb instead of rolling straight down the hill.
Utilize your smartphone
If you’re parking in a large garage, take a picture of the stall numbers. Or, if you’re in the middle of the city, use a parking app to document your location. That way when you’re ready to return to your vehicle, you can use GPS to find it most easily.
It’s important to hid valuables and any indication that your vehicle might be worth breaking into. That includes smartphone cables, GPS units, shopping bags, purses, electronic devices, loose change and more. The trunk is the safest place for these items.
Do a walk-around
When you return to your vehicle it’s a good idea to look it over for any damage it may have incurred. There is nothing worse than noticing body damage weeks later. Take a look around before you go anywhere to make sure your vehicle is in the condition you left it.
