What does the Honda Marine Science Foundation do?
The Southern California oyster population has been in decline for decades due overharvesting, but that’s something Honda is working to change. On Tuesday, February 7, Honda revealed that it has been working to help return oyster populations to their former glory for a year now as part of the Honda Marine Science Foundation.
What is the Honda Marine Science Foundation?
Since its inception, the Honda Marine Science Foundation has supported the Southern California Native Oyster Restoration Project. Together the two organizations work to monitor oyster populations through data collection. Education is also a major component. In fact, the project got its start at the UC Santa Barbara’s Bren School of Environmental Science and Management. Today, researchers are working to better understand the role of the oyster in the coastal ecosystem. However, what’s clear is that stronger oyster populations are essential to stabilizing California’s shorelines. That’s another important message researches hope to better communicate to the public.
